Results – Roberto Scalzone Tribute

Well what an amazing weekend it was.

When Fil Petriella first ran the idea of hosting an event to pay respect for Roberto Sclazone we knew our club had to be involved.

Roberto’s father Olympic Gold Medallist Angelo Scalzone competed on our grounds at the 1973 World Championships. The committee were excited at the prospect of hosting such a prestigious event on our grounds particularly using our new ISSF Trap layout. It was great to have Roberto’s son (also named Angelo) to be with us for the shoot.

Entries for the event blew us away with the field being restricted to 15 squads filling very fast. Fil had done so much work in securing sponsors and making sure there were plenty of prizes up for grabs for all shooters of all shooting abilities. Lots of lucky draws and even a lucky squad draw (won by Squad 4). Fil’s words from day 1 were that we don’t have enough big “fun” events in ISSF anymore. All major ISSF events are selection events where shooters are competing with a goal of securing a spot on a team etc and the fun side of our great sport can sometimes be lost. It was a refreshing concept that was greeted by all who competed over the weekend.

Our club is blessed to have so many people keen to help out (either committee or just ordinary members) on big occasions and this was no different for this shoot with an abundance of people helping out to get the grounds ready, work the bar, clean the rubbish bins, run the scoreboard, fill trap houses, clean club house and toilets, do the canteen, run the office, paint trap houses, set traps, ref and score first squads, mow lawns, whipper snip, and of course run around like headless chooks when we had a power outage in the area to organise generators to get 2 of the grounds up and running. A big thank you to EVERYONE who has helped in any way make this shoot the success that it was.

Some great scores were recorded particularly by Mitchell Iles with a great 167/175 + 25/25 in the Barrage to win both the Off the Gun section and the Barrage for the Cup. Well done Mitch.

Melbourne Gun Club looks forward to hosting this huge event for 5 more years and together with Fil we plan to make each year bigger and better again. We apologise for having to cut the targets back to 175 due to the time lost with the power outage but all shooters who wish to will receive a discount next year on their entries if competed this year. With the first year being such a success I am sure more and more companies next year will be keen to jump on board and build this event to the biggest ISSF event in the Southern Hemisphere.

Thank you all again for those who attended and we hope to see you in 2021 for an even bigger event. Stay tuned
